iTunes Mix Tapes idea

Back in the old days, when home taping was the in thing for budding pirates and music fans alike, making mix tapes for your friends and family was pretty much commonplace. It was also nice to put together a tape for the car if you’re going on a long journey. It’s nice to be able to go through your collection from time to time and share bits of it with other people and I think iTunes could bring all that back but in a perfectly legal and profitable way. It’s nice to be able to go through your collection from time to time and share bits of it with other people and I think iTunes could bring all that back but in a perfectly legal and profitable way. In theory everyone could benefit from the model I am proposing. The idea would work as follows:

The idea would work as follows:The end user creating the mix (Selecta) would browse iTunes for the songs he/she would like to include in the mix and compile it in a shopping cart fashion.

The end user creating the mix (Selecta) would browse iTunes for the songs he/she would like to include in the mix and compile it in a shopping cart fashion. When Selecta is happy with the selection of songs he/she should be able to put them in the order he/she wants and even create some artwork for the mix including any special messages if it is to be a gift.

When Selecta is happy with the selection of songs he/she should be able to put them in the order he/she wants and even create some artwork for the mix including any special messages if it is to be a gift.In the case of a gift for a friend, Selecta would then purchase the Mix Tape as a gift for the other person’s iTunes account.

In the case of a gift for a friend, Selecta would then purchase the Mix Tape as a gift for the other person’s iTunes account.

It would be a nice touch if the final product could be digitally re-packaged and re-tagged (ID3) as a compilation album but with embedded linking to purchase the album/release from which the song originally came.

Not only can Selecta buy it as a gift for someone else, he/she can also buy it for himself but to take it even further, wouldn’t it be great if Selecta could grab some code to embed the Mix Tape on their own website or blog so that all their friends/followers can share the experience?

In this case, it would also be nice to add a little incentive for this… Maybe one free song for Selecta for every 20 songs he/she sells through Mix Tapes.

That’s basically the idea. Let me know what you think.

I will also try to get this information to the people at Apple to see what they think of it.

I have to admit, I find iTunes to be the most pleasant and hassle free shopping experience on the net. Adding features like Mix Tapes can only improve the experience and generate more revenue to continue to drive improvement within iTunes and change the way the music industry works for the better.
